I, however, was awake – held captive inside a world created by a gifted writer, unable to return to my own until everything was resolved, explained, settled. With all my work done by 10 p.m., I sat in a quiet room. All through a busy day, I was constantly tugged towards it, grabbing every chance to read a few chapters. And – for once, the trite and overused phrase actually applies. If you read one book this month, make it this one.Alex Michaelides‘ debut novel “ The Silent Patient” is brilliant. What I will say is that it is brilliantly clever, well plotted and completely unputdownable. This psychological thriller is fast paced with a killer hook and it is nigh on impossible to review without entirely ruining it. Theo is just a compelling character as Alicia and his dedication to uncovering the truth reveals some similarities between he and his charge they are both from difficult backgrounds and it is this affinity which tightens the bond between therapist and patient. This first person narrative exploring the mute Alicia contrasts wonderfully with the diary entries. In the present day Theo has undertaken his own investigation into the months leading up to the night she stopped speaking. Gabriel has encouraged her to keep a diary and to see a counsellor for the difficulties she is encountering, but do any of her missives indicate that she is capable of homicide? These musings show a woman who is unravelling at the seams and for whom life is becoming difficult. Using the clever narrative device of a diary to give a voice to Alicia we learn of the events leading up to Gabriel’s death via her entires. A thriller with a massive sting in its tail, it is brilliantly plotted and will be one of the books of 2019. Refusing to speak she becomes the focus of psychotherapist Theo Faber who is convinced that he can unlock the events of the night of Gabriel’s death and find out just why she committed murder. She is an artist, he a photographer and they lived a glamorous and charmed life – what reason does she have for murdering her spouse? She is convicted of his murder and subsequently admitted into psychiatric care. When Alicia shoots Gabriel, her husband, five times, it seems to be a random act of violence. The Silent Patient is a heart-stopping debut thriller about a woman’s brutal and random act of violence against her husband – and the man obsessed with discovering why. Theo Faber, a forensic psychotherapist, has been consumed with the case for five years, and is the only person able to unravel the mystery of why.
